Location: Khayelitsha, Western Cape
Sikhula Sonke is transforming pre school education in Khayelitsha, Cape Town. This organisation works with Early Childhood Development Centres (ECD's) or créches to train and support teachers, educate parents and improve facilities to develop children to their full potential and prepare them to face the challenges of Primary School Education and life.
The Need for Education in Africa
Khayelitsha, as with most townships, is home to many créches or childcare services. These créches are vital resources for the care of children while mothers work long hours to sustain their families.
Traditionally these créches have focussed mostly on caring for the children to see that they are safe and their basic needs are met. Sikhula Sonke ensures that teachers are trained and empowered so that children are stimulated and their educational, nutritional, health and emotional needs are met.
Sikhula Sonke Education Programs
Teacher training: A basic and advanced diploma in Early Childhood Development. Both courses are a year in length.
Parent Training: Give parents the tools and knowledge to be actively involved in their children's education.
Monitoring of ECD centres: Assist teachers in implementing their programs & ensure that children are being stimulated and developed
Partners: Linking partners help to upgrade ECD centres and provide them with equipment.
Counselling: Providing counselling support for teachers.
School Readiness Programme: A coordinator supports the ECD centres to ensure that children are equipped and prepared to attend grade 1 at primary school.
The Sikhula Sonke Impact
Sikhula Sonke is working with 39 ECD centres in Khayelitsha which combined are looking after 1921 children. You too can have an impact on the education in Africa.
