The BBC hands over The Box to Breadline Africa

On the 4th of November the BBC  in conjunction with The Box project will donate the container to Breadline Africa. Louise Seligman, Breadline Africa’s chairman, will accept the container on behalf of Breadline Africa in an official ceremony at the BBC studios. She will be on BBC breakfast and will be interviewed by Declan Curry and then will be on working lunch, BBC world, BBC 24 news and World 24.

Jeremy Hillman, BBC News Editor, commented: ‘The BBC Box has been followed by many people around the world for the last year on radio, television and online. It has greatly helped BBC News to capture the imaginations of our audiences and allowed us to engage them with the story of the stormy waters of the global economy. So I’m delighted that this editorial project is now going to have a long term charitable benefit. The BBC container’s new, permanent home on dry land where it destined to help some of those people worst affected by the global recession is a fitting end to our project. I’m very grateful to the shipping company NYK with whom we have been working, as well as Breadline Africa, for their part in making this happen’.

Tim Smith, Breadline Africa’s director, says: ‘We are very grateful that the BBC has chosen to donate this container through Breadline Africa. We have been supplying containers throughout South Africa for the past 17 years to poor communities, helped by donations from people in the UK, the Republic of Ireland and the Netherlands.   These containers, more than 100 of them, are being used as soup kitchens, classrooms, libraries, ablution blocks, and clinics in rural and urban settings across South Africa, but normally they do not receive the kind of publicity which this one has, courtesy of the BBC.   We hope that this will inspire more people to give towards these projects, which are a tangible and very visible way of helping communities in need’.
