Hope in Art is delighted to announce that the second Hope in Art competition will take place in Autumn 2011. This biennial art competition is open to everyone over the age of 16 years and can be in any medium. The theme for this competition is FAIR (or anything that sounds like it, e.g. fairy, pharaoh, fare). Artists should visit www.hopeinart.com for rules and instructions for uploading images of their work so that members of the public can vote for their favourite piece. A prize of equal value will be judged by a panel of experts. This panel has yet to be finalised though Ralph Taylor, the director at Lazarides Galleries has agreed to chair it and Penelope Keith (actress) has accepted an invitation to be a member. There are three generous cash prizes, plus.
- A £2,500 prize which will be awarded to the work with the most votes from the general public.
- A £2,500 prize which will be awarded to the work judged as favourite by the panel of experts from art world
- A prize of £500 for the most imaginative “take” on the theme in organisers’ opinion
- There will also be a prize available to members of the public who register to vote.
- There is no entry fee..
- Deadline for entries October 15th 2011, voting and auction 16th October – 20th Nov
All the artwork entered in the competition will be available for sale online to members of the public, once the competition has closed. Money received from each sale will be split between that artist and the charity Breadline Africa.

Spirit of Hope by Andrew van de Merwe. Winner of Hope in Art 2009
‘There are as many opinions about any piece of art as there are people looking at it. A lot of people who are not involved in the art world thoroughly disagree with the choice of the judges of the Turner prize so we thought we would organise a competition where the public gets to do the judging. And if the judging is being thrown open to everyone so should the competition itself.’ – Carole Taylor, Founder, Hope in Art
Hope in Art was established in 2008 as a not-for-profit organisation intending to raise money through the medium of art for charities working in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Ard Matthews from Just Jinjer handing over signed shirt to Marianna Boguslavsky
Unless you have been hiding under some rock, you would have heard all about the online and sms competition that we have been running for the whole of this month. Basically, you can win an evening with your favourite local celebrity (just imagine playing pool and drinking beers with Just Jinjer!). The details are here (http://www.breadlineafrica.org/celebs) so check out the competition, sms/donate online, and stand a chance to win a really awesome night out.
The participating celebrities have been really generous with their support. Ard Matthews has donated a golf shirt he wore to the Nelson Mandela Invitational and this shirt will be auctioned at the 27dinner at the Wild Fig. I had the pleasure of meeting him as unlike other celebs who might have their assistants do everything for them, he popped by our offices himself, said hi to the team and even posed for a photo with me.
Bailey Schneider and Heinz Winckler have also donated some special personal items and our Facebook auction group will go live next week where you will have the opprtunity to bid on these momentos…highest bid gets the prize.
We are launching our first ever sms campaign (with an online component) this month…it goes LIVE today! We want to take you out to dinner with one of your favourite local celebs. All you need to do is to make a small, or big (the bigger the better!) donation towards alleviating poverty in Africa and you could win an evening out with Just Jinjer, Heinz Winckler, Sasha Martinengo or 94.7 Highveld Stereo’s Bailey Schneider.
The competition runs from 1 – 28 February 2010, and to enter simply donate to Breadline Africa via SMS (36010) or on our website, www.breadlineafrica.org/celebs. The more you donate, the better your chances to win the prize. And don’t forget to choose which celeb you would like to meet if you win: you do this by including the correct code (JINJER, HEINZ, SASHA or BAILEY) if you enter by SMS, or checking the appropriate tick box if you enter online.
We are thrilled at the support we have received from these South African role models. The competition winners are guaranteed a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – as well as changing lives through their donations to Breadline Africa.
MXit, the global mobile social networking and instant messenger, has joined forces with us to help generate support in the fight against poverty in Africa, by promoting the competition to its three-quarters of a million music lovers. The MXit Music community will be encouraged to open their hearts and SMS the short-code, adding their support to stop African poverty in its tracks – while having the opportunity to engage for an evening, with some of South Africa’s best music talent.
Last year, Breadline Africa was the first NPO to be featured on Idea Bounty. We had an influx of amazing and creative ideas outlining various ways of raising funds online and Shaun Dunne emerged as the clear winner. This year we are proud to launch this winning idea. Shaun has created the web application using the Twitter API for this competition and the premise is pretty simple:
1. Ten people will sign up (these 10 people will be chosen from the Breadline Africa followers on Twitter and a DM will be sent to them)
2. Once the chosen ten have signed up, they will receive an email to let them know the competition has started, they have 48 hours to raise as much funds as possible and they need to get their followers to donate in their name so they can win the coveted prize. The email will also include their unique link.
3. These ten tweet their link – or direct people to the site.
4. People have 48 hours to donate and get their followers to donate.
5. The winner is the one with the most donations in his/her name.
What we loved about this idea is that it’s an original one, we like the limited time component and the fact that only ten people are chosen and that they need to urge their followers to donate, help Breadline Africa raise funds and help them win the prize.
So follow us on Twitter and you just might get chosen…
Yes we made the cut. Breadline Africa has been chosen as one of the top 12 finalists for the fourth annual NGO web awards. SANGONeT announced the shortlist this week and the whole Breadline Africa team is delighted to have made it this far in this prestigious competition.
The entries were judged according to criteria including innovation, integration, aesthetic, and the extent to which the site meets overall organisational objectives. The selection committee comprised of Guy Talor, Lebo Marishane and SANGONeT staff members Jan Moolman, Nicolle Beeby and Matthew de Gale. Winners will be announced on 20th October at the SANGONeT “Social Media for NGOs” Conference in Cape Town.
Fingers crossed Breadline Africa gets one of the top 3 winning spots!
We are pleased to announce that Breadline Africa has partnered with Revlon (thanks to their very generous donation) to bring all our Facebook friends and fans our 10 campaign. We have 2 fabulous Revlon hampers worth R1,000 each up for grabs as prizes for 2 lucky winners.
The premise of the competition is simple. All you have to do is submit 10 names and email addresses to marianna@isonkatrust.co.za and stand a chance to be the winner of the lucky draw taking place on 1st of November.
Everyone that submits the 10 email addresses will be placed in the draw. Competition is open to everyone except staff and family members of staff of Breadline Africa. You need to be residing in South Africa to receive the prizes. The emails submitted will receive one email asking them to opt in to the Breadline Africa newsletter. They will not be distributed in any other ways.
Competition ends on 30th of October so join our FB fan page or FB group and start sending those emails!
